Making Money With a Website – How To Monetize a Website Traffic?

Making Money with a Website Traffic

Making Money with a Website Traffic

Do you want to start making money with a website but you don’t know how to monetize a website traffic?

So often, I get asked this question: how can I benefit from my website without showing ads? Some people might not like to flood their website pages with a lot of Google Adsense Ads, Bing/Yahoo Ads, that will distract the website visitor from the goal they are visiting their website. Or maybe they don’t want these ads (mainly banners and sometimes text) to show ads for their competitors!!

And maybe the revenue from these ads is not something they can consider as a full time income, which is caused by the need to have a big traffic and relevant highly targeted ads to be show on their website (over which they don’t have much control) in order to have people clicking on the ads and then, the website owners getting paid for these clicks.

What many people don’t know, is that, there are many ways to monetize a website without solely depending on Google Adsense ads, as these require a lot of daily traffic in order to be effective and help them make money with a website. And in many cases, these ads are not highly targeted and not relevant to the visitors of the website, which means, fewer clicks on the ads, and thus, less money to be earned.

I am writing this article, to give you an idea about some of the best ways to make money with a website. Please note that this requires treating the website as a real business that would take a decent amount of quality work in advance in order to start generating a decent and sustainable income. If you are expecting a get-rich-quick or get-rich-overnight methods, then please, don’t continue reading.

That being said, let’s start with the first, and in my opinion, the best way to monetize a website traffic:

1- Affiliate Marketing:

In my opinion, Affiliate Marketing is the best way to make money with blogging. To many people, this might not be the most desired way to make money with a website, as it usually takes a good amount of effort and time before starting to generate income with Affiliate Marketing. But here is the thing, if done correctly, the amount of work put in advance will help you to make passive income that won’t require a lot of work or money in the future in order to keep generating income with the products/services you promote in your website. You can read more in my article on why I consider Affiliate Marketing  the best way to generate a passive income.

The key is to write a useful content and recommend products that are legit and useful to your audience and be honest with your opinion about the products you promote and mention the pros and cons. People always look for honest reviews before buying stuff online. Don’t scam people in order to force them buy products and get you the commission as this will cause them to distrust you and will affect the reputation of your website/business. Think long term! You can check my article here on How To Make Money Reviewing Products Online.

If you think that there are no products in your niche to promote as an affiliate marketer, then just go to Google and type in the search bar the name of your niche + affiliate program (e.g. health products + affiliate program) as in the following image, and you will be surprised with the number of affiliate programs out there in every niche.

Amazon for example, allows the affiliate marketers to promote any product that is listed for sale on Amazon.com. There are thousands and thousands of products in all categories that you can promote. You can also check Clickbank.com for Digital Products that you can promote in different niches and get commissions that are up to 75% of the price in some cases. These two platforms alone ( Amazon and ClickBank), can earn you a full time income if you are able to promote useful products to your audience.

Monetize a website with affiliate marketing

Of course, as an Affiliate Marketer, you will need to develop some technical skills that will help you get more targeted traffic to your website, which could be free (e.g. SEO, Email, Social Networks, …etc.) and paid (e.g. PPC Campaigns on Google Adwords, Bing Ads, Facebook, Instagram, …etc.). The first (free) will make you a passive income on the long term without additional major costs, but will require a good amount of work in advance. While the latter (paid), can bring you faster results but will need an additional investment in order to test, optimise and then scale PPC Campaigns.

You will also need to be able to right captivating, informative and accurate content that will help in convincing the people to buy the products you are promoting. And the content should be SEO friendly in order to be able to rank on the first page of the search engines in the future.

Such requirements, my cause people to hesitate before they try to enter this field. But nothing cannot be overcome. You don’t have to become an SEO expert or a professional copywriter. Through the right training, mentoring and tools, you can really start generation income with affiliate marketing regardless of the level of your technical skills. If you know how to use your email, then you will be able to deal with the necessary technical stuff you will need to use during your journey.

For this reason, you can join training platforms such as Wealthy Affiliate, which will provide you with a hands-on training program and tools that you can use in order to become a successful Affiliate Marketer. They provide both free and paid memberships, I recommend that you start by joining the free membership and see the benefits there and then you can decide if you would like to reap the full benefits of the platform by joining the premium membership. You can sign up and start the free training, or you can first read my Wealthy Affiliate review here.

2- Selling Ad Space:

And I’m not talking about displaying ads from Google Adsense. The same space you that you might use to show Google Ads, can be used directly by you to advertise more relevant products or services that are highly targeted to your audience. If you have a niche website with an engaged audience, you can seek other businesses in the same niche (or they might seek you) and sell them the Ad Space for a specific duration that could be hours per day, days, weeks or even months for a specific amount of money that is deposited directly by the advertiser to your bank account or to your PayPal account. You can install a PayPal button easily to your website in case you have a WordPress Website.

Since these ads will be shown to a highly targeted audience, it will be easy to charge the advertisers big amounts of money that will make much more feasible to you than showing Google Ads.

3- Sponsored Content or Articles:

Similar to selling Ads Space to promote other relevant businesses and products, you can also write Articles about these products or businesses in agreement with their owners for a fixed amount of money. And maybe, you can also include inside these articles an affiliate link to the promoted business/product that might earn you a commission for sales or leads generated from that link. This approach might be even more feasible that just Selling the Ad Space as the written content gives more details about the product or service and help in Pre-Selling those products and services. Which means a higher conversion ratio and higher commissions.

As mentioned earlier, this sponsored content must be relevant to your audience and respond to their needs in order to make it highly converting and income generating.

4- Selling Your Own Digital Products (e.g. E-Books, Training Courses, Software, …etc.):

Whose products would your audience trust the most? Your products! They are engaging regularly with your website because they trust in what you say and they will be willing to learn from you. So, if you are good about something, why not teach it. It can be a small urgent problem that you help people to know how to solve through a short E-Book or short Video Tutorials. Or could be a set of skills that you can teach through a complete training course that you can host at your website.

As mentioned earlier, you can easily build an Online Store and add a PayPal Plugin to your WordPress Website and limit the access to these digital products to those who pay to get them. Or you can build your store on a specialized platform such as Sellfy (read my sellfy review here), and then you can easily embed it to your website through a code that you get after easily building your store there. This will make it easier for you rather than handling the technical issues, payment gateways, security, ..etc. by yourself.

Selling your digital products online is one of the greatest ways you can make money online with. Especially that you have full control over the products you are selling, and you can respond to comments and complaints and make improvements to your products immediately in order to increase the trust with your website visitors.

5 – Monthly Subscription:

This model can help your audience to get more benefits by accessing an exclusive content that you produce regularly. This could be, in addition to the Digital Products in point # 4 above, a Weekly live webinar the direct interaction with you, regular press release and exclusive articles and material about the latest updates in the industry. Access to a direct mentorship from you or your team members, …etc. Just make sure that you can create a new valuable and useful consistently and keep the subscribers happy to pay you their money.

6 – Generate Leads for Other Websites or Businesses:

Companies would pay you to collect emails and phone numbers if you have a targeted audience in a certain niche. The process goes similar to selling products through Affiliate Marketing, but instead of selling products and getting people to pay money and then getting your commission, you only have to ask them to submit their emails or phone numbers that the company can use later to directly contact them and offer them certain products or services. You get your commission whenever someone submits their email address or phone number. Usually the payout (commission) for this kind of offers is less than the one you earn from generating a sale as in item # 1 above, but it is much easier to convince people to submit their email address or phone number.

Such offers that you can promote can be found on Affiliate platforms such as Maxbounty and Peerfly. These are called CPA (Cost Per Action) or CPL ( Cost Per Lead) offers.

7 – The Money is in the List, Building and E-mail List is a Must:

Ever wondered why you get a pop-up window asking you to submit your email when you enter a certain website? They are collecting their Audience’s emails in order to send them offers for their or other’s products at a later stage. E-mail marketing is known as the most cost effective way to generate sales or leads. It goes directly to the inbox of a highly targeted prospect which might become a customer. Start collecting the emails from your audience and then start sending them offers to useful products or services you provide or affiliate with.

In order to start collecting the emails, you need to make the necessary setup in order to build the squeeze page that asks the website visitors to submit their emails. This can be done by using different services such as Aweber (Only Paid Plans) or Mailchimp (Free and Paid Plans).

8 – Sell your Website (Flipping Websites):

If you have an income generating website, you can sell it for a specific price that you decide depending on the value of the regular income you are generating (usually the price is around the total income your website can generate in 24 months).

The price can vary depending on the possibility to finding new ways of generating money through the website, the quality of the website, the scarcity of similar websites in the same niche, …etc.

For this purpose, you can sell your website on marketplaces such as Flippa, We Buy Websites and Fe International.

*****************************************************************************

This list is nowhere near exhaustive. There are many other ways to monetize a website traffic, such as displaying Google Ads, PPV Ads (Pop-ups), building an e-commerce platform and many other ways. But I have provided you with what I believe to be the most cost effective ways that will lead to the most amount of income generated per initial money invested and that will work better on the long run.

I recommend, whether you already have a website or just starting, to go to the Affiliate Marketing direction due to the benefit of the long term passive income generation. 1. Wouldn’t it make sense to sell ad space on websites that are more location specific?

For example, places to visit when visiting Rome. Then sell ad spaces to businesses that are located in Rome?

I am curious as to why you would sell ad spaces to other businesses within your niche? Also, how is this different from traditional affiliate ad banners?

    • Hi Jessie,

Thank you for your comment and for your valuable questions!

I agree, it makes all sense to sell ads that are location specific in case if your website is specialised in a specific location or country. But if it is in a specific niche that is available everywhere (e.g computer networking), then you better promotes products related to the same niche that people would buy from anywhere.

For the last two questions, you don’t have to promote your competitors, but you can promote close products or business that offer services in the same niche that you don’t provide yourself. Let’s say you are blogging about web development, you can promote host providers for example.

It differs from the Affiliate model in that in affiliating with them you only get paid if someone goes through your link and buys their services or products. while in solid ads, you get paid a specific amount of money depending on how long you posted the ad on your website.

      I hope that helps!

Let me know if you have more comments or questions!

      Cheers,

      Amjad

  3. Hey, really nice article and a lot of information, I love it how you went into detail with everything. I have a blog myself and I didn’t know about selling my ad space. but I will check that out. The third point is also very interesting. I have the last question: what is your main income source?

    • Hello Aaron and thank you for the feedback and for the question!

Currently I’m focusing on the Affiliate Marketing model. I’m trying to find the best products/programs/books that are related to my audience and reviewing them. With time, and once I have more audience, I will start facilitating other sources.

      Cheers,

      Amjad
