How to rank a website without backlinks?
This is one of the most common questions in the seo world that gets asked by webmasters and website owners.
And I know where is this coming from.
SEO takes relatively long time in order to take effect and start getting your website rankings and organic traffic from search engines, especially with a new website that is not easy to ask others to link to it.
I know how frustrating it feels to do your best to optimize your website for search engines and still, not get any rankings or organic traffic.
I have been in your place.
And probably you have seen some video by some guru that advises you to do email outreach to hundreds of other blog owners in order to finally get one backlink. And to do the same continuously in order to keep building links to many pages on your website.
As if you have a whole team working for you like he does!
But luckily, I have learned during the past few years many skills and tips that helped me in getting ranks for my websites for different keywords without backlinks even in difficult niches.
And that’s why I wrote this guide.
I have included here 11 actionable tips that can help you do the same and increase the page rank without backlinks for pages and blog posts on your website.
And if you are still asking yourself:
Yes, a website can rank without backlinks if you consistently follow the eleven tips I will mention below.
I know that it might seem difficult to believe, especially if you have tried to improve your website’s ranking without backlinks and it didn’t work.
But I personally ranked this website you are at now in the most difficult and competitive industry. And I started with almost zero knowledge about seo and websites.
Most important is to understand that there are over 200 ranking factors that Google uses in order to rank a certain page or website in the SERP, and backlinks, although are important, but they are not the only ranking factor.
The main seo ranking factor above all is to focus on the user experiences and fulfilling the search intent, and this can be fulfilled by many methods, and I will mention some of them here.
Here are eleven tips on how to rank a website without backlinks:
1 – Find Easy-To-Rank Keywords (aka: Long-Tail Keywords)
Originally, long-tail keywords are the keywords that don’t get the highest search volume regarding a certain topic or niche, and for this reason in particular, these also don’t get the attention of many other websites, which makes them of a lower competition and makes it easier to rank under these keywords.
And you might be asking yourself: what is the point of going after such keywords with relatively low search volumes?
The main reason for that is that as I mentioned above, these are of a lower competition, which makes it easier to rank under them without the need to build links, which is our main goal here.
But in addition, these keywords usually, but not necessarily, tend to be longer phrases compared to the related main or root keywords. They might consist of 3, 4 or even more words in one search query, and that means that they carry a more clear and specific intention behind using them in the first place, which makes them of a more commercial value.
For example, someone that is searching for the keyword “yoga”, which gets a high search volume, might still be early in the stage of exploring what yoga exactly is, while someone searching for a keyword with a lower search volume such as “online yoga training” might be more willing to pay money when they land on a website that has a page about an online yoga training course.
And there are different ways of finding such keywords such as the Google auto-suggest feature in Google search that shows you variations of the main keywords when you enter it in the search bar, in addition to the related searches at the end of the search results page.
These usually show you longer variations of the root keyword that don’t get as much traffic, but might be still easier to rank for.
Now in order to find the search volume of these keywords you can use different tools such as the free Google Keyword Planner, but this one doesn’t show you the competition for each keyword.
I personally use a premium tool that is called Jaaxy, which shows me the average monthly search volume for the keyword in addition to the number of other pages competing to rank under the same keyword, in addition to the overall difficulty to rank under that keyword without backlinks.
2 – Blog To Give Value & Help People
If you are trying to rank with a website that only has few service or product pages in a competitive industry, then you might not be able to rank at all.
And even if you can rank the main pages on your website, you might still be missing out on lots of opportunities from getting potential customers if you don’t use your blog to target people who are still early in the funnel and don’t know what service or product they need to buy in the first place.
For example, if you sell formal shoes, and you only want to rank your category or product pages, then you might be able to rank for the local searches in your area and get the traffic from that keyword and target people who already know what to buy.
But why to stop there and miss out on the opportunity of selling to people who still don’t know what to buy?
For example, if you use the Google auto-complete method mentioned earlier with the phrase “best formal shoes”, then Google will give you suggestions for many other keywords such as “best formal shoes for rainy season”, which you can target by writing informative and helpful posts on that would help people decide what they should buy, and then, you can link from that post to the related product or category pages on your website or on Amazon if you have an affiliate website.
These are usual long-tail keywords that you can find using the tools mentioned in the first tip above.
And don’t worry about not being the best writer in the world in order to write useful blog posts.
All what you have to do is to research and write in your own language as if you were talking to a friend or to an 8th grader. This is the type of content that gets engagement from people and gets them to take action, and not an essay that is written by a PhD degree holder.
English is not my first language, and still, I write blog posts on this website you are on and I get rankings without backlinks and people do engage with my content and consider my recommendations.
If you are still fearful about blogging, then you might need to join an online training that teaches you how to do that properly starting from brainstorming and finding keyword ideas, to writing the general outline of the blog posts, into writing and optimizing blog posts for search engines.
My recommendation here is to join Wealthy Affiliate, which is the same place where I learned how to do blogging in order to make money online with affiliate marketing, but the same principles apply if you want to blog for any other goal.
You can check my Wealthy Affiliate review in order to learn more about this amazing platform and community that provides you with the necessary training, tools and community in order to help you in your journey.
3 – Be Consistent
This is related to the previous point regarding blogging as you might need to keep creating helpful content in order to increase your website’s reach through targeting different keywords, and to show Google that there’s someone present behind your website and that you are building a real brand, which will make Google trust your website more and will allow it, with time, to be able to rank without building backlinks.
How often should you blog?
It depends on your time, budget (if you want to hire content writers), on the competition in your industry or niche and on how much you want to scale your business. You could blog once every day, or bi-weekly.
4- Leverage Google Trends & Google Alerts To Find New Opportunities
This is an overlooked method that many website owners and content writers don’t leverage for their own benefit.
You can use Google Alerts to in order to get Google notify you when someone writes a new article about a certain topic in your niche.
And you can use Google Trends to find the consistency in searching for a certain term or topic over the months and even the years.
But you can also use it in order to find ideas for new keywords that are exploding in search and other website owners haven’t targeted yet.
Write the name of your industry, or type in any general keyword that is related to your industry in the search bar of the Google Trends tool, click enter and then scroll down until you see the “related topics” and “related queries” boxes that show you the most trending keywords and topics in your industry with and indicator on the growth of these terms and topics on the web.
And you can click on any suggestion in order to dig deeper and find more results.
These are good keywords that you can study in order to find if they have a long-term potential and low competition using the methods and tools mentioned in the first two tips above.
And since these keywords are still new and have not much of a competition, then you might be able to rank fast on Google under these terms and without backlinks if you target them by creating quality content.
Also, you might use this tools to find news in your industry to write blog posts about. And although this kind of posts usually has a shorter lifespan, but it can be easier to rank for without backlinks and drive some traffic to your website, which might increase the overall trust of your website and help the overall rankings of other pages on the same website without building links.
5 – Internal Linking & SEO Silo
Internal linking between different pages on your website can help Google understand the overall structure of your website and can help Google understand what each page is about through the anchor text you use when you create an internal link to each page or post.
These links can be a good substitute to using external backlinks, and they can help increase the authority and ranking of the pages to which you link from other pages by sending them some seo juice, which will help increase the rankings of these pages without having to build links to them from external websites.
There are many ways you can do SEO silo for your website, you can link between different blog posts, different product or service pages, or between a blog post and product/service page if they are relevant to each other. The following flowchart from Webris.org is just one example.
6 – Relevancy Is Key
Google is now trying to understand and rank websites based on the overall structure and content on that specific website and they are trying to decrease their dependence on backlinks from other external websites.
And as in the previous tip, you need to do internal linking in order to help Google understand and rank your website properly.
And this cannot happen without the different pages on your website being related to one another, which means that you need to make your website focused on creating content that is related to one niche or industry.
And if you ask about how can Wikipedia rank for all of those keywords in different niches and topics, then it’s because they have hundreds of articles in every niche that are linked properly to each other, which makes it possible to rank under all these keywords.
But if you are now going to create a website that competes with Wikipedia or Amazon, then you have to go for a specific niche or sub-niche, depending on the competition.
For example, if you are trying to go after the whole health niche, then you might not be to be able to rank for any keyword without backlinks as this market is very big and there are many big players that you need to compete with such as Webmd and others.
You might need to niche down to something more specific like eczema treatment or hair loss for men. And maybe, after you have dominated your sub-niche, you can expand your website to include another sub-niche in the same market.
7 – Write Viral Content For Getting Social Signals
Viral content is the type of content that gets a massive appeal from people and makes them share it with others and market it on your behalf for free.
And to do so, you need to create helpful blog posts that people would be willing to share with others, and there are certain types of posts that can get viral such as list posts, breaking news posts, very practical and actionable guides, …etc.
And in order to get ideas about what to write about with the possibility of getting your posts go viral, then you can do a manual research, or you can use tools such as Buzzsumo in order to find what kind of posts got the most shares on social media channels in your industry.
The value of getting your content go viral is that Google will see the real social shares (aka social signals) as a sign that this content is something people would like to see and read, which might help in getting it ranked high on the search engines without the need to build backlinks to it.
In addition, a piece of content getting viral might have the opportunity to get seen by other bloggers in the same industry, which might make them link to it from their websites and thus, giving your website backlinks without you asking for them.
8 – Improve The Organic CTR To Improve Rankings & Traffic For Existing Pages
Organic CTR (Click-through rate) is the percentage of clicks a specific page gets from the search engine results page compared to the overall number of impression it gets in the first place.
This might not be useful until your a specific page makes to page 1 on Google, but it is a powerful tip.
In addition to the fact the increasing CTR can help you increase traffic without backlinks to your website even if a specific page is still in position 5 on the SERP, which is the ultimate goal of getting ranks, but it can also have a slight impact on the ranking of that page of your website if Google notices that your page is getting more clicks than the ones that are ranked higher for the same keyword, which might finally lead to convincing Google that your page deserves a better ranking without having to build external links to it.
Now in order to have a higher organic CTR, you need to follow some best practices in optimizing the meta title and meta description of that page in order to entice people to click through to it, such as: using odd numbers, current year, using brackets, involving emotions, …etc.
But at the same time, don’t promise what doesn’t exist. Because if Google notices that people are visiting your website and then, click back to find another search result, then this will give them a signal that they didn’t find what they were looking for in your website, which might make its rankings drop.
Make sure to keep improving on the page you want to rank higher in order to make people stick to it and not look for other results.
9 – Fast & Secure Website
In the past few years, Google has announced many major updates where they stated that having a secure and fast loading site will affect the rankings of a website directly.
A secure website means using and SSL certificate in order to encrypt and protect your website visitors information.
And a fast loading site means that people can view the content on the different pages of your website without having to wait for long time (not more than 2-3 seconds).
And both of these factors directly affect the user experience on your website, which is the ultimate concern of Google in order to keep people using its search engine.
This might mean more cost on you as you need to purchase the yearly license for the SSL certificate, and you need a fast hosting which means a higher cost if you want to get a premium hosing, whether shared or VPS hosting like the one provided by Beyond Hosting.
Luckily, I host all my websites at Wealthy Affiliate, which provides a free SSL certificate & lightning fast hosting with premium support for up to 25 websites. And all of that without the need of paying more than the original cost of their normal membership.
10 – Local Citations & Social Profiles
Local Citations are the different mentions of your local business on the web which include your business name, website, phone number, physical address, email address, ..etc. in directories such as Yelp and Yellow Pages.
And these can have a direct impact on ranking your business website for a certain keyword in a certain location.
And these might be mainly necessary only if you have a local business that provide services in a certain physical area or location, which makes it critical to learn how to do local seo for your website.
But the social profiles such as Facebook pages, IG accounts, LinkedIn Pages, …etc. can slightly help your website’s overall rankings even if you don’t have a local business.
And you might argue that these are actually backlinks that you need to build, which is against the purpose of this article of helping your website to rank without link building.
And I agree with you, but at least, these are the easiest links to build as there’s a systematic way to build them without having to go and outreach hundreds of other bloggers in order get one backlink. And some of them can be done by yourself in few minutes only.
11 – Build A Brand In Communities (Quora, Reddit, Forums, …etc.)
Brand is the new way how people can decide if they can trust your website or not these days.
And this is justified due to the big number of websites out there in almost every niche.
And building a brand doesn’t mean that you need to compete with the biggest brands in the world. As I explained earlier, niche is the new big.
You need to make people in your niche remember your website and your business name whenever they need to learn something about that niche.
And this might take time, and one of the best ways of doing it is to create helpful and valuable blog posts targeting long-tail keywords that are easy to rank for without building links to them, which will make people recognize your brand with time.
But you can also build your brand by being active in the different communities where your audience might exist such as industry forums, sub-reddits, Q&A forums like Quora, …etc.
When you get active in such communities and help others, people will start to recognize your brand and will start to follow you, and maybe they will start to search for your business name on Google, which gives Google a signal that your website is a trusted resource for people and this will also push its rankings higher without the need to build backlinks.
You can learn more about how to use this method from my guide on how to increase blog traffic for free (13 practical methods), but in brief: make your main goal is to help others solve their problems and answer their questions directly inside these communities, and you may link to some resource on your blog once in a while only if it helps the reader get more benefit.
Like in the previous tip, this might look like a link building strategy, but I don’t consider the same because you can actually do this by yourself without the need to outreach to others, and in addition, this method allows you to engage with others which helps build your brand better as people will trust your brand more when they interact with the person behind it.
Conclusion – What Is The Best Method To Rank A Website Without Link Building?
There’s no right or wrong answer here, some of the above mentioned tips are mandatory in order to rank a website whether you want to build links or not, such as the site speed and security, and some are not mandatory, but doing them consistently can increase your chances of getting ranks without backlinks, such as blogging consistently and building a brand within relevant communities.
The main key to getting Google to love your website and to rank it high on search engine is to focus on the user experience and on helping the people in your niche solve their problems and improve their lives.
But the fastest and the most realistic way to increase a website ranking without having to build links to it is to focus on targeted the low-hanging fruit (long-tail keywords), whether in your service/product pages or in your blog posts, relevancy and proper internal linking between the different pages on your website.
